9SPEC - Special

COLOR NAME: Special
COLOR CODES: 9SPEC
LURE(S) PICTURED: Dowagiac Minnow (159Spec)
DESCRIPTION: The 'Spec' marking was used by Heddon to indicate a 'special' color for a lure. In most instances, the color was not a standard or cataloged color for the lure. Heddon like many manufacturers in the earlier days would make lures to any color requested by a customer, provided a minimum quantity was ordered, usually 12. The lure pictured is actually Yellow Perch (aka Bar Perch). The practice of marking boxes 'special' was done until the 1940's based on the types of boxes that have been found with that marking. One drawback to this from a collector's point of view is that there is no guarantee that the lure in the box is the one the box came with since there is no other indication of color.
